Chapter 23 – Soul of Fire

“This is highly unusual, Merek,” Marius said from a seat in the Findoor throne room. “What is the meaning of this?”

All eight Council members were present at this meeting, along with Merek, Krycin, Cy, and King Valerra in his throne.

Merek gave Marius a plain, emotionless smile and spoke. “It appears events are unfolding around us as we sit in our comfortable castles and ignore them. The Fioraden have reported an attack on their people by a wizard in black armor. The Astaran desert has been struck with a monstrous storm like nothing Galadir has ever seen. It rivals the storm that raged over the Rashean Sea the night Krycin was found. There is a disturbance in the Western Badlands where the fabled Mordo are said to live in peace, and the Ardan chieftain Ranto has been murdered. Runners from the south are reporting that the Narshuk tribes are on the move, heading south, deeper into the Eastern Badlands, and yet, when I look around at this Council, and this kingdom, even myself, I see nobody worried about these events.”

Marius stammered, struggling for words, but Merek raised his hand to stop him. “I am guilty as well. Life, air, shadow and earth. That's my count so far. And if you include the Narshuks themselves, and his own native element, that would be six of the eight elements Gladius has collected.”

“Impossible,” Darson shouted, jumping to his feet. “My son doesn't have the strength or the knowledge to remove a living being's soul, let alone absorb it. And besides, Gladius was reported dead in the Fioraden mountain collapse. How can he now be doing as you suggest?”

“I don't know, but I suspect somebody in this room does know.” Merek looked to Krycin, and every other person in the room followed suit.

Krycin shifted in his chair and cleared his throat. “Gladius lives.” A gasp ran through the room as the news sank into each Council member and all others in attendance. Krycin continued despite their visible shock. “I'm not certain what he's doing, or why, but I know it's him.”

Merek walked up the middle of the room, looking at each person with his dark eyes. “Gladius confronted me before he went to the Fioraden mountain. He was looking for information on The Traveler. He was carrying a stolen tome of Lyecian magic, and may have managed to translate some. He also stole magic from my personal library, so we have no way of knowing what spells he has, or what he is capable of.”

“We know he is collecting the elements to make himself more powerful,” Marius said. “The next he will be after is fire, which he will need a dragon for. Those are in short supply these days. Many appear to have disappeared from the world, and those who are left are near impossible to find.”

Krycin's face lit up and he stood to make himself heard. “Serrin!”

Marius whirled in place to look at Krycin. “Serrin?”

“Serrin was working on a way to summon a dragon,” Krycin said, his voice filled with excitement.
